re: Jefferson Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum)

Dear Mr Barber,

In November, 2000, based on the information contained in a species stauts report by
Leslie Rye and Wayne F. Weller, COSEWIC determined the status of the Jefferson
Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) in Canada to be Threatened. The reasons for this designation are its fragmentary occurrence in small, fluctuating populations which, together, occupy an area under 2000 km2 and the evidence that it is adversely affected by declines in habitat quality and habitat availability due to housing developments and agricultural conversion. Accordingly, the Jefferson Salamander is included as a Threatened species in the present Schedule 1 of Bill C-5, the federal Species at Risk Act

Yours sincerely,
(signed)
David M. Green, chair
