A scanned copy. Done on a non-word processor, called a typewriter, I believe.  Some of the spelling is original, even if it appears wrong. The name Elliott has one t, even though it often seen in this text with two tt's. The figures are left out at his time but as this is a City document a copy is in the Central library, in the Canadiana Reading Room 615-3524 - code 971.3535.PHI

A HISTORY OF THE CAWTHRA-ELLIOTT ESTATE
By Ken Phipps, LACAC student, September 1989
INTRODUCTION

The Cawthra-Elliott estate, situated just south of the QEW and east of Cawthra Road, is a City-owned property. It was developed in 1925 by the last member of the Cawthra family-- a family influential in the development of Toronto and its surrounding area since the time of Upper Canada's earliest settlement. The estate property first became Cawthra land in 1808, and is a small part of the original Crown grant given to Joseph Cawthra, a Loyalist from Yorkshire, England.

This report scans the history of the property, the estate, and the people who have been involved with it. It begins with a brief examination of what has happened to the estate since the city purchased it in 1975. It moves on to portray the life and character of Grace Cawthra-Elliott, the remarkable person who created the estate, and who ensured that the land around her home remained in essence the forest it was the day Joseph first walked upon the grounds. The report then discusses the history of the Cawthra family and in some detail its most significant members. Finally this report talks about the architect and the landscape architect who designed the estate, what their major concerns seemed to be, and what they tried to accomplish with this and other projects in which they were involved.

This report exists because the City needs to understand the background and every element involved in the formation of an estate as rich in history and useful potential as this one in order to make a firm and correct decision regarding its immediate fate.
