****   IMPORTANT MEETING   ****
About the
ELIMINATION
of the
Northmount Community and the Cawthra Bush

JAN. 12  -  MONDAY  -  7:00 pm

CITY HALL  -  2TH FLOOR  -  COUNCIL CHAMBER

The City has called upon the community to attend this meeting (or otherwise make their opinions known), regarding the development proposed at the top of Northmount.  The City now opposes some of the changes the developer has made.  Our best chance to oppose this develoment in months!  This is the second to last meeting, there will be one Feb. 10 (OMB), but it is very necessary there be a strong community out-cry.  It is not just against this development but what would inevitably follow - townhouse subdivision one after the other.  Dangerous traffic conditions.  The end of Northmount as being quiet, livable, safety and affordable community.

Did you spend so many years of your life and your own dollars just so a developer can say, what a great place to make a ton of money off of (after getting rid of current home-owners), to get even more rich from?  Lets not give the developer another reason to laugh all the way to the bank!  Is he going to pay you for the loss of the community you helped to build?  Will he be paying the tax increases that the Ward Councillor and the Mayor have noted resulting from this so called improvement in our community?  Unless you like paying higher and higher taxes come out and say no!

- Take a strong stand for your community, the stronger the better.  This is like voting, it is yes or no, not maybe or only under certain conditions.  Once you start to agree, then you are considered as agreeing.  They may suggest to offer you something but all they want is you to agree or go away.  How could you hold them to any verbal promises or even written ones (especially after they have already changed horses in mid stream, so often), and believe me I know of many examples of  promise them anything & give them nothing.  Small gifts are not worth the long term losses & damage to the community you live in.  You can say no, you should say NO and no is a legitimate opinon.

- If got a copy of the City's notice (mailed out), with its envelop stabled to it and can not make the Jan. 12, meeting call me so I can pick up as soon as possible.

- If you have filled out the form letter and can not make the meeting call me so I can pick it up as soon as possible.

- It is a good idea to make a couple copies of the form letter you are going to present to the City at the Jan. 12, meeting, one for you & one for me.

- There are many more good reasons to take a stand and just say NO but I am very, limited by time and space currently.

Form letter regarding the Northmount Townhouse Development.

As The Planning Act states that the public should get 20 days notice of meetings.  That the City sent out notices dated Dec. 24/03 but the post mark said Jan. 5/04!  That arrived in the mail either Jan. 7 or 8th, giving people less than a weeks notice.  That the City report was not available till the Friday before the meeting.  This is not adequate notice or time for people to plan on attending the meeting, to review and/or research the issue and not enough time for the community to organize itself to meet this challenge.  Therefore; the City should hold another community meeting that proper notice is given for.

As there has been made so many changes to the original development proposal, "amended the Site Plan Application", the planning process should be started over.

That only single homes should be built on Northmount Ave. and the zoning for townhouses should be removed.  As the long term damage that will be done by this and the townhouse subdivisions to follow will destroy the existing community that taxpayers have invested years, tens of thousand of their dollars creating a safe & livable community.

As Carmen Corbasson, the Ward 1 Councillor, has promised in Council Chambers to aid the community in changing the local zoning that allows for townhouses.  We call upon her to carry out her promise.

The Character and Identity of the community is specifically protected by Mississauga's Official Plan(s) and new building are to be "compatibility with surrounding land use", which is clearly not the case.  This sets a dangerous precedence and the long term effects, traffic, people who move in and have yards so small that they not able to relate to the existing community values & culture, are just some of the reasons that will result in the elimination of Northmount's unique character.

The Cawthra Bush will be as Peter Lyons, the City's Urban Ecologist has said, be pounded into the ground by surrounding development.  The Cawthra Bush has both Provincially and National significance due to the species that live in there.  In fact a new species of concern has been found!  The existing character of the community  (deep & wide single home lots), has protect the Cawthra Bush and must continue to do so, for the Cawthra Bush to remain a natural
Heritage treasure for future generations.

That this form letter be forwarded by the City to the OMB.

That there should be a full disclosure of documents to the Cawthra Ratepayers' and Residents' Association and City staff should fully cooperate with the CRRA Chair, Don Barber.
